A hair and beauty salon in Low Fell has won seven awards at the British Hair & Beauty Awards despite a year of tough setbacks.
Julie Barras opened Sparkle Beauty in January 2019, but due to Covid-19 and national lockdowns the salon has been closed.
But over a year later, they’ve bounced back stronger than ever and now have the rewards to prove it.
Salon owner Julie says, âI am really proud that we were able to win these awards despite all the setbacks we have faced.

“I always have to remember this is a national award and I’m incredibly proud to have purchased the gold award from our little northeastern region, Low Fell.”
Owner of the Body and Soul Therapy business, Christine joined Julie when the salon was recently opened.
When it first started out, it had no clients, but since the show reopened in April 2021, it has been sold out weeks in advance.
âI could easily have locked myself in during the blockades, but I didn’t,â Christine said.
âI made sure to stay in touch with my fabulous clients, to maintain my social media presence, to update my skills by taking new courses. I also offered virtual treatments to clients who wanted them and created new packages for my treatment menu.
âIt’s amazing to have been recognized for all the hard work that goes behind the scenes to ensure that my treatments are the best they can be, every time. “
During the lockdown, Julie took advantage of this time to take numerous online courses to pivot the business.
âI stayed in touch with customers via email and sending them little cards and messages, I did a lot of social media work and I also created gift boxes and care packs for customers. She added.
âI think every business struggled in one way or another during the pandemic, but I chose to use the time wisely and work on things that I didn’t have the time to do. previously.
âIt certainly paid off, and once we reopened we had a full log again. “
